Minty

Writing after almost a decade here. This is from a few years back when I was in US in Virginia-

The owners above my house had 4 pups and a dog. The pups used to rush outside the house the moment their door opened in the morning and come jumping downstairs. Then wagging their tail they would stand right outside the glass door of my bedroom and start barking. The black one- Minty was the cutest of all, also loaded with much attitude.

(Nothing exciting is going to happen here guys, I am vegetarian. I can’t feed non-veg to a dog. Sorry. Their food has to be vegetarian too :).)

So I would reluctantly go into the kitchen and try to find something interesting. Over months I had tried everything, lots of mix and match- like paneer on biscuit, roasted potatoes, some Indian chilly snacks ;), chickpea cutlets, even glucose biscuits (who knows, they are biscuits) etc. Minty was never happy with what I fed them. Others managed to like something or maybe just stick with “this is food, just eat it”. But not Minty. He was also sure to display his dissatisfaction. So there the disgruntled looks would start. The woofs and the whines. He would even show his anger to me with an “Every day?!!” look.

By evening there would be jugnus everywhere in the area around my house. And another episode would begin. The dogs would jump and chase each jugnu (firefly) until it’s light went out and then switched over to the other. They were “always” mesmerised, “every” single day!

I miss them quite a lot.
